The Urban Nation Museum Berlin Chairs

The Morpha chair began as a commission to design the seating for Urban Nation Museum Berlin — one of Europe's most distinctive contemporary art institutions, dedicated to urban and street art. Urban Nation needed chairs that could hold their own in a space defined by bold visual language without competing with the works on display. The brief called for something architecturally resolved, materially honest, and durable enough for the demands of a public museum environment. The result is the Morpha: the chair Urban Nation Museum Berlin selected for exclusive use across their permanent collection displays.

Design Principles

The Morpha chair is defined by structural economy. Every element of the form has a reason. The profile is drawn from a single continuous gesture — seat, back, and leg structure reading as one resolved shape rather than assembled components. This discipline in silhouette means the chair recedes appropriately in gallery contexts, offering visitors a place to pause without pulling focus from the art around them.

The proportions were calibrated for long-duration sitting — essential in a museum setting where visitors spend extended time in a space. Seat height, rake angle, and lumbar positioning were refined across multiple prototypes before arriving at the production specification. The material palette is restrained: the finish and structural choices reference the raw, industrial character of the Urban Nation building itself.

Museum-Grade Durability

Public furniture demands performance that residential design does not. The Morpha was specified for museum use from the outset — meaning construction methods, finish durability, and ease of maintenance were design constraints, not afterthoughts. The joinery is engineered to resist the racking forces that accumulate over years of public use. Surfaces were selected to clean easily without degrading. Every prototype was tested under load conditions that simulated years of daily institutional use before the production run was approved.

Urban Nation Museum Berlin

Urban Nation is a Berlin institution of international standing — a museum dedicated to urban contemporary art with a permanent collection and exhibition programme that draws visitors from across Europe. Being selected as the furniture for their gallery spaces is a significant endorsement: the institution's curatorial team evaluated multiple options and chose the Morpha as the chair that best served both the visitor experience and the integrity of the collection displays. The Urban Nation chairs are visible throughout the museum's public spaces and have become part of the gallery environment that visitors encounter and remember.

Product Design at House of Nuances

The Morpha chair sits alongside our interior design commissions as evidence that HON's design thinking extends beyond spaces into objects. The discipline is the same: understand the brief precisely, resolve the form with integrity, specify materials that perform. If you are working on a furniture commission, a product design brief, or a commercial interior that requires bespoke seating, we would welcome a conversation.
